The Clothesline Project
Arlington County Central Library
1015 N. Quincy Street, Arlington, VA
A survivor of domestic violence is someone who has endured intimate partner violence such as sexual, physical, emotional, and/or financial abuse. A victim is someone who has lost his/her life at the mercy of her abuser. For almost 50 years the Clothesline Project has honored survivors and victims of domestic violence. The shirts, in this visual display, speak volumes to the diversity and deep impact that domestic violence has on individuals, families and communities. With this display, Doorways is publicly honoring and supporting victims and survivors of domestic violence.
Campus Dating Violence Prevention
Doorways will launch The Red Flag Campaign Dating Violence awareness poster campaign this October on the University of Marymount’s main campus. This poster campaign designed by the Virginia Sexual and Domestic Violence Action Alliance and funded by the Verizon Foundation will raise awareness about how bystanders can stand-up to the warning signs of dating violence and how to recognize the differences between healthy and unhealthy relationships. For more information visit the website at: www.TheRedFlagCampaign.org
Community and Professional Presentations
Throughout October, Doorways staff will provide domestic violence presentations for health care professionals, the faith community, teens and young adults, the gay and lesbian community, and area colleges. Responding to Domestic Violence: A Workshop for Pastors, Rabbis, and Spiritual Leaders
Rock Spring Congregational United Church of Christ
5010 Little Falls Road, Arlington, VA 22207
One in three women will experience violence at the hands of an intimate partner in their lifetime. Often, victims turn first to spiritual leaders when confronting abuse and violence in the home. Therefore, it is crucial that clergy and other spiritual leaders be equipped with the knowledge and resources to guide parishioners through this life-changing experience. The Arlington Ministerium and Doorways for Women and Families, which runs the only domestic violence Safehouse in Arlington, is pleased to offer a training for clergy and lay leaders during Domestic Violence Awareness Month.
