Doorways' Freddie Mac Foundation Family Home Rebuild Project
Project Partners
Last year Doorways turned away 1,361 individuals seeking temporary shelter. With our new Freddie Mac Foundation Family Home, we will increase the bed space available for women and families experiencing the crisis of homelessness, and be better able to help them achieve housing stability and self-sufficiency.
We are extremely grateful to our supporters for supporting this vital project. Funding for The Doorways' Freddie Mac Foundation Family Home rebuild project is made possible in part by a $500,000 grant from the Freddie Mac Foundation, $600,000 from Arlington County, a $200,000 grant from Virginia Department of Housing and Community Development (DHCD), Virginia State Assembly grant of $137,500, and a Phillip L Graham Fund grant of $75,000.
Doorways is also very proud of our partnership with the Northern Virginia Homebuilder’s Association’s (NVBIA) charitable arm, HomeAid. Through our HomeAid contract, NVHomes, one of Northern Virginia’s largest and most reputable area homebuilders, is the project’s general contractor with a signed pledge to obtain approximately 30% of the construction costs in in-kind contributions of labor and services, currently valued at approximately $400,000. To date NVHomes has commitments from construction vendors and subcontractors to donate all of the painting, drywall, kitchen cabinets and other materials for the new shelter.
The project consists of demolishing the existing structure and constructing a two-story (three level), 7200 square foot dormitory building designed by Wayne Neale of Neale Architects of Alexandria Virginia. The new shelter will increase the resident capacity from 16 to a maximum of 21 residents. The shelter will be staffed 24 hours per day, seven days per week, 365 days per year with qualified case managers and trained volunteers. The new shelter is being built with the objective of receiving certification from the Arlington Green Home Choice Program – a program intended to encourage environmentally responsible construction and energy efficiency.

You Can Help Us Meet The Challenge!
The Kresge Foundation, a national foundation whose mission is to strengthen non-profit organizations that advance the well-being of humanity, has awarded a $400,000 one-time Challenge Grant to Doorways’ “Campaign To Do More.” The Kresge Challenge Grant is an all-or-nothing challenge designed to help Doorways reach out to existing supporters and members of the community to achieve the $7.2 million Campaign goal with one caveat. In order to receive the grant, Doorways must raise $800,000 in new private funds by July 1, 2008. So every new donation and pledge YOU make applies to the challenge!
