Doorways for Women and Families envisions a community where all people live free of violence and have safe and stable housing.
Doorways for Women and Families creates pathways out of domestic violence and homelessness leading to safe and stable lives.
For most of us, the word “home” conjures images of warmth, happiness, and a sense of belonging. But what if the only place you had to call home was where someone was causing you and your children harm? What if home didn’t exist at all, and the only way to keep your children off the street was to sleep in a car or beg friend after friend for a couch? These situations affect more Arlingtonians than you might imagine.
A safe home is the first step in moving out of harm’s way. It’s why we offer women and families a nurturing, confidential and secure home where they can escape from trauma. We work with each woman and family we serve to address the root causes of homelessness or violence and offer holistic services that provide the best chance for long-term success.
The thought of ending homelessness and domestic violence is daunting, but what once seemed impossible, no longer is. Together, we can prevent violence, end homelessness, and build brighter futures for thousands of Arlington families.
The Doorways Model
The causes of family homelessness and domestic violence are profound and varied. As a result, there is no single service that universally helps families overcome their barriers to independence. Doorways has developed a three-tiered strategy to meet both the immediate and long-term needs of our clients, as well as address the economic and societal issues that lead to violence, poverty and family homelessness:
- Provide immediate and long-term, safe housing for women and families fleeing domestic violence and homelessness;
- Domestic Violence Program and Safehouse
- Freddie Mac Foundation Family Home
- HomeStart Supportive Housing Program
Deliver holistic support services that teach individuals the skills and tools necessary to lead safe, independent lives;
Actively participate in community partnerships and advocate for political and economic changes that will eliminate the root causes of violence, poverty and family homelessness.
Our goal is that every family that walks through our door walks through another - into a safe home of their own.
Stories of New Hope
The women and families we see are compelling examples of resilience, determination, and love. While we may give them a companion by their side during a difficult time, we receive a source of inspiration in return. Read their stories.
