This month provides an opportunity each year to educate the community on the pattern of abusive behaviors that alter the lives of too many of our neighbors, friends and family. Get involved with us throughout October by participating in our awareness events, sharing news and social media posts and more. Join our cause to stay engaged all year long!
Highlights from DVAM 2018

NOVA Pride – September 19th
Every program we operate is staffed with persons trained in supporting survivors who identify as LGBTQ+, as well as staff who identify as LGBTQ+. We understand that intimate partner violence occurs across all populations, and we are here for every survivor in our community. We tabled at NOVA Pride to share about Doorways’ programs and services.
Purple Purse Challenge – October 2nd-31st
Doorways participated in the Purple Purse Challenge, which helps empower survivors with the tools they need to achieve safety and stability.
Arlington’s DVAM Kickoff – October 4th
“Domestic Violence doesn’t just happen at home. It is happening at school, work, and in the Arlington community. Let’s talk about it.” Doorways joined the County’s kickoff event featuring Arlington community leaders and guest speaker Kate Ranta.

Brighter Futures Breakfast and 40th Anniversary Celebration – October 12th
Arlington advocates and community leaders came together on Friday, October 12th, for this free fundraising event highlighting our community’s collective impact in the lives of thousands of local women, men, youth and children who experienced homelessness and abuse. Attendees heard firsthand accounts from individuals who have benefited from Doorways’ programs and services, and learned about issues impacting thousands of Arlingtonians, and how we can all make a difference in their lives and in our community.

Arlington’s DVAM 2017 Kickoff – October 4th
Join Arlington’s Project PEACE and Doorways at the Arlington County Courthouse at 4:00 p.m. in the 10th Floor Jury Assembly Room for a DVAM kickoff! The short program will honor survivors and local accomplishments, and will include special announcements and light refreshments.
Purple Purse: Shop for a Cause – October 7th
Join your local Allstate agent to support our community at their Purple Purse event benefiting Doorways. Shop at Bloomingdales at Tysons Corner Center from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. on October 7th. At checkout, let your cashier know your purchase is for charity and you need a duplicate receipt. Allstate will collect the duplicate receipts on the 2nd Floor to track purchases benefiting Doorways. Bloomingdales will donate 10% of total tracked purchases! Learn more and RSVP on Facebook.
Campaign for Brighter Futures Breakfast – October 13th
Join us Friday, October 13th for the Campaign for Brighter Futures Breakfast! This hour-long, free fundraising event highlights more than 39 years of building brighter futures through Doorways’ progressive programs, life-changing results, and its unbelievably generous community of supporters. New this year – the Breakfast takes place at Hyatt Regency Crystal City to accommodate even more guests. You definitely won’t want to miss this!

Shattering The Silence: Artists Speak Against Domestic Violence – October 18th
This evening of spoken word and music was hosted by the Northern Virginia Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. at Busboys and Poets in Shirlington. Donations will benefit Doorways.
Turkey Trot Kickoff Party – October 19th
We gathered with friends and communtiy partners at the 2016 Arlington Turkey Trot Kick-Off Party, the proceeds of which benefited the 2016 Arlington Turkey Trot beneficiaries: Doorways for Women and Families; Arlington Food Assistance Center (AFAC); Arlington Street People’s Assistance Network (A-SPAN); Arlington Thrive; and Bridges To Independence

The Georgetown community came together in solidarity with domestic violence survivors to mark the conclusion of Domestic Violence Awareness Month with the 3rd Annual Halloween 5K Against Domestic Violence. All proceeds from the event went directly to Doorways. Learn more.

County Board Declares October Domestic Violence Awareness Month in Arlington
The declaration was shared on October 6th at the Arlington County Courthouse during the Third Annual “Purple Out Courthouse” to mark Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Read more.
Arlington County Police Department Partners with Doorways to Bring Attention to Domestic Violence
Throughout the month of October, a purple ribbon donated by Doorways was displayed on many of County police vehicles in support of the efforts to reduce the incidence and severity of domestic violence in our community. Read more.

Purple Out
On Thursday, October 22nd, 2015 community members near and far joined us for Purple Out on Purple Thursday to raise awareness, support survivors and take a stand against domestic violence.
5th Annual Howl-o-Ween Dog Walk
Through the family- and dog-friendly Howl-o-Ween Walk, our community raised awareness and funds to support survivors of abuse and homelessness, both people and pets. This joint effort between Doorways for Women and Families and Homeward Trails Animal Rescue occurs around Halloween each year, so plan to join us next year!
